Thing #23

At the beginning of the 23 things module I was a little overwhelmed and I am glad that I didn't look ahead because it probably would have been discouraging. I have already reflected on the first 13 things so I'll save being redundant. Things 14 through 23 helped tie many loose ends together for me and it gave me the opportunity to go deeper with some of the applications than I had previously been. It gave me an overall better understanding of the NETS-T. I had a good experience with the 23 Things module but I am pleased to say that I have finished.

Thing #22-The Cloud 2010

I attended a session on using Acuity Unwired with CPS responders during the 2010 conference. During the session the presenter took all of the participants through the entire process of using responders to complete Acuity assessments. The presenter emphasized the ease and convenience of using Acuity Unwired and modeled each and every step of the process, then went back through and answered any questions asked by the participants. It prepared me for modeling the program myself to the teachers in my school.

Thing #21 Webinar

I viewed the Action Research eluminate session that was originally presented on December 1st. I watched the recording on December 21st. The eluminate session was presented by Valerie Wilson and Karen Karr. The purpose of the training was to prepare the TIS for their Action Research Projects.

SKYPE Thing #19

Recently a Social Studies teacher in my school used skype to communicate with a soldier from our area who is stationed in Afghanistan. He allowed the students to ask questions and thank him for his sacrifice to our country. I thought the activity was especially valuable to this group of students because it motivated them to discuss global issues and they were all eager to find out as much as they could.

THING #18 AUP

https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=explorer&chrome=true&srcid=0B5T4pqUBNOoyYjAyZjQwODQtZGI4Yy00MzNiLTliZWYtYzE3YWRhYjM2Nzdi&hl=en&authkey=COqql6gI

Yes, our district's AUP does provide for web 2.0 publishing and sharing permissions. At my school we keep all AUP's on file in the library/media center. Any student who does not have an AUP on file is blocked from internet use through a program called Web Warden. If a student has no AUP on file then they are strictly forbidden from any internet use at school.

THING #17 Twitter in the classroom

While searching for exciting ways to use Twitter in the classroom I read about the concept of using Twitter to provide instant feedback to students and a way for them to provide instant feedback to each other. Because it is pushed to mobile devices students can access and share information instantly. They can ask and respond to questions.

THING #16 Mah Twiddla

Not exactly a screenshot but I did get a picture of myself giving a lesson on twiddla

Thing #15 RSS

RSS is a tool to bring content from your favorite resources to a common digital location.

THING #14 My Favorite Blog http://www.dancarlin.com/disp.php/hh

My favorite blog is #60 on the list provided and is actually a podcast as well as a blog. It can be found at http://www.dancarlin.com/disp.php/hh. This hardcore history blog/podcast raises essential questions that challenge traditional history to exmine the topic in new ways. The look of the site has a very sleek and mysterious appeal and relevance to most any period of history can be found. It is a great example of how critical thinking skills can be applied to history.

Thing 13 Mid- Module Reflection

I have had fun completeing the 23 things activities and learned some new tricks along the way. Things 1,2,and 3 were a good way to ease into the activity and helped establsh the foundation for the rest of the module. Things 4 through 8 continued by getting a little more involved in the application of tech tools. Wallwisher, voicethread, wordle and blogger are all great ways to actively engage students in a collaborative environment. I especially enjoyed exploring photofunia.com. Things 9 through 12 involved examining various forms of media like videos and podcasts to take ordinary lessons to the next level. My favorite so far has been the app maker that I found on www.gotoweb20.com. I amd excited to continue with the next 10 things!!

Thing #12

Teens today are often criticized for being tethered to their mobile devices. They are able to follow their favorite musicians, sports teams, social networking sites, news, weather, etc. through the use of apps. Imagine if you could personalize your own app for your classroom that students could use to track assignments, due dates, and class calendar updates. Now you can!! With www.appmakr.com/

I found the app maker on www.gotoweb20.com.

THING # 11
This video would be a great tool to follow up the Boston Massacre Mock Trial Project mentioned in the thing #10 blog post

Thing #10

In my 6th grade U.S. History classes one of my favorite lessons was a mock trial for the British soldiers accused of murder following The Boston Massacre. It was a lesson that required multiple copies of several primary source documents and a handout that guided them as they formed their opinions as to whether the soldiers were guilty or not. This lesson could become 21st Century by hosting a "Guilty/Not Guilty Wiki" and the wiki would allow students to discuss and collaborate in a common forum. The primary source documents, rubric and handout could be kept on the wiki and students could access them digitally. It could also have a links section where students could post links to supplementary independent research on the topic.

THING #9 STORIES OF COMMUNITY- Self Taught Art from the Hill Collection

On itunesU I found a podcast on from the Florida State Board of Education called Stories Of Community- Self Taught Art from the Hill Collection. The video shows works of art from regional artists who had no formal training in the arts. It would be a good podcast to show students and lead a discussion and have students generate ideas on what types of community art you might find in our region. Students may give examples of artists or pieces that they have seen. They could search digital resources for examples of regional art. They could also compare and contrast the styles of art created in the two regions and then even possibly create an original piece.
